Smart Era Lighting Systems
“Illuminating Your World with the Power of the Sun”
Entrepreneur Rafael Badilla is an industrial designer from Costa Rica. When he moved to North Carolina he found unattractive designs of solar system lights in parks and parking lots. He saw an opportunity to stand out in the industry and in 2012 established a business in Winston-Salem.
“The designs and low quality of products bothered me, so I started to draw what I thought were better looking designs,” says Rafael. “I wanted to offer a good-looking and long-lasting product that I could actually have in my own outdoor space.”
SELS, Smart Era Lighting Systems, designs and offers a collection of stylish, commercial grade solar lighting products optimized for outdoor areas, including parking lots, gardens, recreational areas and more. Their designs provide safety for pedestrian walkways and other spaces while offering an environmentally friendly option and causing minimal disruption to natural habitats. The company achieves this by avoiding the damage caused by digging trenches to run electrical wires, while eliminating labor costs and the expense of being connected to an electrical grid. From rural or urban parks and walkways to residential and commercial landscapes, SELS designs and installs the model best suited for the needs of each space.
SELS lighting products use only LED lighting, which is more energy-efficient and results in the following:
- Immediate reduction in electricity bills. By switching to LED, 80-90% less lighting energy is used compared to traditional incandescent light bulbs.
- Less heat is generated because LED bulbs are very efficient converting electricity into light.
- Long-lasting LED products average over 50,000 hours. Typical incandescent bulbs generally last 1,000-2,000 hours.
- SELS LED products don’t contain mercury or other hazardous chemicals, unlike the Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFLs).
- No UV rays are emitted.
Rafael started working with Prospera a few months ago to receive guidance on government contracts and procurement as well as marketing ideas. Today, SELS continues to grow and innovate the solar lighting industry in North Carolina. To learn more, visit selsled.com/.
