For Alexander Hakim and his wife Lorena, starting their own business was more than setting themselves to become financially independent; it was about doing what they love to do while having fun. “Doing what you love to do has to be fun and special,” says Alexander, who is the main barber at his barber shop. “We wanted to own our business and be financially independent while enjoying what we do. Whenever a small business owner is able to achieve that, it becomes something priceless.”
Both entrepreneurs noticed an opportunity to bring a different barber experience in a lakeside town in North Carolina, based on the idea that getting a well-done haircut at a barber shop does not have to be boring.
Alexander and Lorena started the process of becoming business owners two years ago and began working with Prospera in the fall of 2016 for guidance about licenses, permits, marketing, and website development for a consistent online presence. The Cornelius-based barber shop and coffee bar concept opened for business last November, and the business is thriving. With less than a year in operations, A Barber’s Café & Bar currently has three employees and more than 300 satisfied clients. “That is what happens when you enjoy and really love what you do,” says Lorena. “You put the best of yourself in the work you do, pass those positive vibes on to your customers, and they will appreciate that by becoming loyal customers.”
