Meet Our Governing Board: Luz Aviles

Luz Avilés, Vice President at Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC), has built a distinguished career in public service and sustainability. A long-time Prospera board member, she continues to give back through leadership, collaboration, and a deep commitment to community impact.

At Prospera, we are proud to highlight leaders who bring not only expertise, but a sincere commitment to supporting others. Today, we’re excited to introduce Luz Aviles, a respected executive in the utilities sector and a dedicated community advocate whose leadership continues to strengthen our mission and impact.

Career & Professional Journey

Luz Aviles currently serves as Vice President of Marketing & New Products at Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC – The Reliable One). In this role, she leads strategies to generate revenue and drive growth across the full sales lifecycle, with a continued focus on sustainability and exceptional customer service.

Since joining OUC in 1994, Luz has held several leadership positions across the organization, including Vice President of Customer Service, Director of Sustainability—overseeing conservation and renewable energy efforts—Manager of Community Relations, and Manager of Customer Service. Her decades of experience reflect a deep understanding of operations, innovation, and public engagement.

In 2020, Luz was appointed by Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried to serve on the Florida Advisory Council on Climate & Energy, recognizing her expertise and leadership in clean energy. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Central Florida and a Master of Business Administration from the Crummer Graduate School of Business at Rollins College.

A Commitment to Service

Luz joined Prospera’s board of directors in 2019, following her previous service on our Technical Assistance Committee. Her involvement reflects a strong personal belief in the power of community, access, and inclusive economic development.

In addition to her service with Prospera, Luz is actively involved with several community organizations. She serves on the advisory board of the Florida Solar Energy Center, the Sustainability Advisory Board for Orange County, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando, the National Entrepreneur Center, and the Orlando Day Nursery. Through these roles, Luz continues to support long-term progress in areas such as environmental sustainability, early education, and small business growth.

What motivates you to serve as a Prospera Governing Board Member?
It is a great feeling to know I have contributed in some small way to someone else’s growth and success.

What’s one event or occasion that has impressed you during your time volunteering for Prospera?
I enjoy the Success Stories Events. They are a great acknowledgment and celebration of the clients served by Prospera.

How do you relax after a busy week?
I like to work out and spend time with my family.

What is one book that has influenced your leadership style?
What Got You Here Won’t Get You There by Marshall Goldsmith. It’s a very simple read, but challenges you to think on what you should change to continue growing.

What’s the best advice a mentor gave you?
You don’t have to be an expert at everything. Share what you know to help others be more successful.

Why is community service and volunteer leadership important to you?
It’s important to me because it is a way to give back. I’ve been blessed in many ways and through community service and volunteer leadership, I can pay it forward. It is also a great way to learn about the community and engage with others.
