Prospera Regional Board member Maria Balais from Georgia’s Greater Women’s Business Council contributes her time, talent, treasure, ties, and testimonials to support Prospera in the Metro Atlanta area. Keep on reading to get to know her better:
What are your workplace/organization’s mission and products/services?
Currently, I am the Director of Programs for the Greater Women’s Business Council (GWBC). The mission of GWBC is to educate and empower women-owned businesses through certification, programs, and networking events. We are one of 14 affiliates in the nation under the auspices of Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), and we oversee Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. The WBE Certification is a prestigious accomplishment because of the rigorous process to become certified. It is the “housekeeping seal” for women-owned businesses.
What motivated you to serve on Prospera’s board as a volunteer?
As the Principal of The Balais Group, one of my clients was Commissioner Ted Terry, District 6 in DeKalb County. Through a generous grant from his office, he appointed me to serve on the Prospera Board. As a supporter of small business and diverse communities, my service on this board is a perfect fit.
What would you most like the local community to know about Prospera?
Prospera’s services help small and Spanish-speaking business owners learn how to navigate business processes through their technical assistance programs. They are also strong advocates of small business policies.
What is the most important lesson you’ve learned throughout your career?
Management is moving projects; leading is moving people.
Where is your favorite place to have a meeting outside of the office?
There are three places: El Vinedo Local (South American Café and wine bar with empanadas), Apres Diem (Mediterranean fare and coffee with a full bar), and Murphy’s Atlanta (American fare and a historic restaurant in Atlanta for over 30 years). All three places are in the City and have beautiful patios.
Which social media platform do you use most frequently?
Facebook and LinkedIn.
What is one item still on your bucket list?
I want to visit Spain and Portugal.
