Baking Tradition, Passion, and Purpose
Originally from Venezuela, Luz Beracierto discovered her passion for baking at a young age. Inspired by her family’s love for homemade sweets, she learned traditional confectionery techniques from her aunt, who shared cherished family recipes and encouraged her creativity. What began as a hobby quickly evolved into a business idea after Luz took a cookie-making course and received enthusiastic feedback from her family and friends.
Her company, Melao Time, LLC, was officially established in 2023 in St. Augustine, Florida. The bakery specializes in gourmet cookies, including New York–style varieties, all made with natural ingredients and no preservatives. Luz takes pride in offering products that combine artisanal flavor with the warmth of home, a concept reflected in her slogan: “A flavor that reminds you of home.
Finding Guidance with Prospera
In 2022 Luz learned about Prospera through a business orientation session and a referral from the First Coast Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Later, she attended an initial virtual appointment, where she began receiving business guidance. In 2023, after officially establishing her company, she reconected with the organization to continue building her business knowledge.
Through Prospera, Luz received personalized business consulting, QuickBooks® training, an optimized business plan for operations, and participated in several business seminars. These services provided her with the tools to better manage her accounting, improve business organization, and gain financial control.
Strengthening Her Business for Growth
With Prospera’s support, Luz has gained confidence and a clearer understanding of her business operations. She now bakes her products from a commissary kitchen, maintains stronger financial oversight, and actively participates in community events. Attending Prospera business workshops has helped her connect with other entrepreneurs, expand her network, and increase her brand’s visibility across Northeast Florida.
Looking Ahead
Luz’s next goal is to expand Melao Time’s presence through a mobile bakery or food truck, using her vendor permit to reach new customers before opening her own storefront. She aims to make her brand more visible and continue participating in local markets and fairs while maintaining the handmade quality that defines her products.
Her Advice for Other Entrepreneurs
Luz encourages other entrepreneurs to persevere and stay authentic. “Consistency always pays off,” she shares. “Believe in your project, be true to your vision, and don’t simply imitate others. Seek guidance from knowledgeable organizations, ask for help when needed, and keep your business well-organized, especially your finances.”
