North Carolina Clients: Carolina Vargas & Maria Herrera
Sweet Success: A Love for Alfajores Turns into a Thriving Business
Colombian sisters-in-law Carolina Vargas and Maria Herrera turned their shared passion for alfajores into a growing business in Charlotte, NC. Carolina, who lived in Argentina for a time, perfected her baking skills while Maria, then living in Houston, Texas, contributed her enthusiasm for the traditional treat. Reunited in Charlotte, the duo combined their expertise to create the perfect shortbread sandwich cookie filled with dulce de leche.
What began as a project shared with family and neighbors quickly evolved into a fully operational business. By January 2022, Latino Bakes, LLC was established, offering a variety of alfajores, including their popular mini version. Today, they sell their creations at pop-up markets, coffee shops, and through platforms like DoorDash and Uber Eats, while preparing their products from a dedicated kitchen space.
How Prospera Helped Transform Their Vision into Reality
Carolina and Maria discovered Prospera through social media and immediately took advantage of its resources, attending workshops on finance and administration. These sessions provided them with essential tools to strengthen their operations, and Prospera’s one-on-one consultations helped them organize their business and refine their goals.
Recently, they were awarded a Business Plan grant through Prospera’s Technical Assistance Committee, giving them clearer direction and actionable strategies for growth. “Meeting with the provider has given us a clearer outlook and improved the organization of our business,” shares Carolina.
The Meaning Behind the Name
The name “Latino Bakes” represents both their cultural roots and their entrepreneurial journey in the United States. By blending Spanish and English, the sisters-in-law honor their heritage while appealing to a diverse audience.
Consistency and Commitment: Keys to Success
Carolina and Maria emphasize that persistence is essential for any entrepreneur. “You have to stay committed and not get discouraged when something doesn’t work out,” says Maria. They encourage other Hispanic entrepreneurs to remain focused and consistent, even when faced with challenges. “The journey will always have its ups and downs, but believing in your business and staying the course is what makes the difference.”
